The Salvation Army Announces Retirement of General Linda Bond

Following a period of personal reflection and prayer, world leader of The Salvation Army, General Linda Bond, has come to a decision, effective 13 June 2013 (London Time), to relinquish the Office of the General and enter into retirement.

Territorial Commander of The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory, Commissioner James Condon, says General Linda Bond will be remembered fondly within Australia by both Salvationists and the wider community.

“Many of us came to know General Linda Bond during her term as Territorial Commander of the Australian Eastern Territory. When I think of Linda I think of one who always uplifted the name of Jesus,” Commissioner Condon said.

“Linda has served The Salvation Army with dignity and grace. She is an anointed leader who God has used in amazing ways during her term as General, and I would ask that you please join me in praying for Linda at this time.”

General Bond, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Education and a Master’s degree in Theological Studies, entered the training college in Canada as a cadet in 1967 and was commissioned as an officer in The Salvation Army two years later.

Over the past 44 years of fulltime ministry, the General has diligently and faithfully served Jesus Christ in various appointments within The Salvation Army, both locally in corps appointments as well as more senior leadership positions, including her appointment as Commander of The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory in 2008 up until her election as General in 2011.

In accordance and as required by the constitution of The Salvation Army, contained in the Salvation Army Act 1980 (UK), the Chief of the Staff, Commissioner André Cox, will perform the functions of the General pending the election of a new General.

The Chief of the Staff will also shortly be calling a High Council to elect the new General. A further announcement regarding that High Council will be made in due course.
